  • Yoga Anatomy & Physiology
  • Breathing Techniques
  • Mindfulness & Meditation

To ensure the best experience possible, places on this course are strictly limited.

The course is suitable for Sports Professionals, Physios and Yoga Teachers who want to increase their knowledge and practice of Yoga and develop their skills to teach others. It is unique as it incorporates specialist expert teaching modules on teaching Yoga to Athletes and specific Breathwork, Meditation and Mindfulness techniques.

Yoga has been used in sport for many years to help athletes become more flexible and improve joint range of motion and stability.

As well as helping people move better, it is also generally accepted that it is a system of physical & mental well-being, and can lead to a deep sense of relaxation and peace.

Although Yoga is a broad subject, that is studied in a variety of different academic fields, for the purposes of this course, we will study 5 main areas. Evidence based research will be presented wherever possible to support the benefits of integrating Yoga-based practices across each of these 5 areas.

  • Movement
  • Breathing
  • Relaxation
  • Positive Psychology
  • Meditation

Practice & Teaching

Approximately 50% of the total hours will be spent developing personal physical practice and learning to teach and deliver the time-honoured practice of Yoga in a sporting environment.

As this course is designed to equip teachers to work with athletes, the emphasis will be on working with the musculoskeletal limitations different sports present, and how Yoga can help athletes improve flexibility, strength, functional range of movement and stability, so they can perform better in their sport.

The course sets you up for success and equips you with the necessary tools to teach Yoga to professional athletes or amateur sports enthusiasts. Participants will learn how to structure a class, adapt to different situations, and build trust with their clients/teams.

Anatomy

In preparation for teaching, the course will cover the key elements of anatomy that are most applicable to yoga.

The study of human anatomy on this course will reflect the integration of mind, breath, and body, which is the essence of Yoga. Students will acquire enough knowledge to understand functional movement and how, as teachers, they can help students relax and recover, breathe more efficiently, and move more freely.

Subjects covered will include:

  • Breathing biomechanics
  • The Muscular System
  • The Skeletal System
  • The Nervous System

Yoga for Athletes

Teaching Yoga to athletes and sportspeople is exciting and rewarding. Many professional sports clubs employ a specially trained yoga teacher as part of their Strength and Conditioning team.

Equipped with a deeper understanding of how the body works, trainee teachers will discover how athletes and sports people often have restrictions in their bodies, caused by the repetitive movements necessary for them to perform. A consistent Yoga practice can help ease tension, realign skeletal imbalances, and improve flexibility, stability, and range of movement. Instruction will be given on how to teach and adjust athletes safely.

Setting You up for Success

Yoga for Athletes is a well-established business with contacts in professional football clubs and other sporting institutions across the UK. As well as being a Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance Professionals, your course leader Sheila McVitty is also an experienced company director with an MBA for CEOs in Sport. Sheila will take you through all the necessary steps to prepare you to set up and run your own successful Yoga business.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of the course is that you will acquire the knowledge and expertise required to work with athletes and sports people to help them compete or enjoy their sport.

By the end of the course, you will feel confident and competent when teaching a group or individual Yoga session. You will have a deeper awareness of your own body and mind and feel equipped to nurture others to improve their own physical and mental well-being. You will also have the knowledge required to work alongside coaches, sports scientists and medical staff within a football club or sporting environment.
